The Algarve is a very popular destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts (particularly golfers) with its excellent year round climate, unbroken sunshine and high average temperatures. July and August are the hottest months with average temperatures of between 20 and 28 degrees centigrade which are made tolerable by Atlantic breezes. The hottest recorded temperature is 41 degrees, but luckily that is the exception rather than the rule. June is slightly less hot but with as many hours of sunshine and almost no rain. September is another good month if you want to avoid the searing heat, and has an average of two days rain. Because of the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, sea temperatures are usually lower than those in the Mediterranean, but it is warmer in the Algarve/Portimao area.

To give you some comparison on Portimao weather versus the UK: the months of May and October are warmer with longer hours of sunshine and less rain than high summer in the British Isles: weather here in March and November is comparable to the months of June and September in England. January is the coolest month here when the average daily temperature is between 9 and 15 degrees centigrade compared to 2 and 6 degrees in London.

Rain in the Algarve is rather different to the UK because when it rains it really does rain! Portimao does not usually succumb to the long miserable days that are characteristic of wet weather in Britain, but be warned that when the odd downpour does occur it is very heavy but is over relatively quickly. So do not be surprised if someone says that winter rainfall in the Algarve is more or less the same as it is in London as this is correct - but the actual number of wet days is considerably less!
